**2017 CHN Introduction; Protea (Proteaceae)
Family shrub discovered as a seedling on the farm of famed
Protea grower Mike Astone in Aptos, Ca. There he has grown
cut flowers with his wife Tina for Astone's Proteas over
the past 30 years; This selection features the willowy
foliage of one of its probable parents, Leucadendron salignum
'Chief', but unlike 'Chief' boasts larger female flowers.
The foliage of this variety is deep red to purple, and
a significant shade darker than 'Chief' or any other of
the commercially available Leucadendrons in trade today.
Very columnar grower with height, perfect for corners,
thin strips, or hedges/windbreaks; excellent long lasting
cut flower; drought and deer resistant, prefers well-drained
soils and deep infrequent watering once established; great
in the wind; low Phosphorus fertilizer or none at all.
